THERMAL SPA IN ‘SALINAS DE IMÓN’ The ancient salt exploitation of Imón including two ruinous adobe warehouses sited on an spectacular plain, 10km from Sigüenza. It’s a typic castilian large dry land, watered with an unusual saltwater. The regional government will develop a master plan whose aims are to refurbish the warehouses, and to restart the salt exploitation. The plan includes as well the design of a ‘salt museum’, an environment studies school and a ‘hydro hotel’ with bathing facilities in order to take full advantages of this sensational landscape. This thermal spa included in the master plan will provides the region with a striking tourist point. A great north-facing site at the northern tip of the salinas is selected to build the baths. The site is located on the water’s edge, on a narrow strip of land. The linear building is openned to the landscape and to the ancient salt squares belonging to the salinas no longer exploited. These squares, besides the hotel, will be converted into a thermal swimming pool. The entrance is in the midst of the narrow building. Thereby it divides the program into two different areas, students (from the environment school) and hotel guests accommodation. Long corridors link the rooms with the common facilities strategically located: at the entrance the café and the living room; at the rear of the students side, the working-room; and at the rear of the hotel side, the bathing facilities. All the rooms (whether student or guest) are openned to the landscape, therefore it exploites the salinas views to the maximum. The envelope is conformed by many concetre flagstones repeatly folded to enclose all the different spaces which are all linked with the exterior; this cocrete roof becomes stepped terraces accessed from the interior. The building geometry results from the study of the connections between every space: inside corridors, baths or rooms with outside roof terraces, outdoor swimming pool or salinas. The buiding express the transition between water and land emphasising the special relationship of the new baths to the forces of nature and geology.
