‘FIRST’ RESIDENCE FOR IMMIGRANTS IN ALGECIRAS. The ‘Straits of Gibraltar’ is a strategic place beetween Africa and Europe in which two different cultures are coexisting. Recently, the south coast of Spain is suffering from the phenomenon of immigrantion (people who risk their live in order to arrive in Europe). The scheme is a comtemporay example of building trying to provide with real solutions to the contemporary problems, and breaking therefore with traditional planning guidelines. The scheme combines living, working, researching in one building together with leisure facilities and teaching areas. All the elements of the program are organised according to a specific diagram of noises and other factors which distributes the spaces strategically in order to separate the ‘incompatible’ areas. The heart of the building is ring. It is a big steel greenhouse, containing several crops which will support the immigrants’ commercial activities. This comercial space is completely opened to all the ‘guests’ of the building and also to the citiziens of Algeciras. Everything is organised around this opened ring which arrange the developement of the laboratories, shops, and leisure activities. The rooms are located far from the core ring. It consist of isolated spaces with few links with other areas of the building. However the room can be transformed depending on the guest’s activities. For instance, if the owner needed to develope his life in a specific way, an ordinary room could open to a working room with researching facilities, which is directly opened to the crops. A steel structure, comprising repetitive elements, encourage a rapid construction. The areas which are less connected will be isolated with a system of removeable panels, and acoustic baffles used to separate them from incompatible areas. In the future this system enables to redistribute the spaces searching new compatibilities.
